  27.             What is rec.arts.sf.*?
  28.   Rec.arts.sf.* (r.a.sf.*) is a set of newsgroups devoted to discussion
  29. of SF, in its rather broad meaning of "speculative fiction", including
  30. both science fiction and fantasy, as well as that vast blurred mass of
  31. material in between (to steal a phrase from the call for votes that
  32. caused the creation of these groups).

  34.         So what groups are there, anyway?
  35. Here's a short, one-line-per-group listing of the groups:

  37. rec.arts.sf.misc    Replaces rec.arts.sf-lovers as the catch-all
  38. rec.arts.sf.announce     Announcements (moderated: zorch@uunet.uu.net)
  39. rec.arts.sf.fandom    Fannish activities, cons, etc.
  40. rec.arts.sf.marketplace    Personal for-sale notices
  41. rec.arts.sf.movies    SF movies that don't have their own groups
  42. rec.arts.sf.reviews    Reviews of sf/fantasy/horror works (Moderated)
  43. rec.arts.sf.science    Science and theory related to sf
  44. rec.arts.sf.starwars    Star wars, books, movies, etc
  45. rec.arts.sf.tv        SF tv shows that don't have their own groups

  50.   Some of those one-liners might not be very clear...which is why the
  51. original charters of the groups are included here as well.  They show
  52. the intent of the people who advocated most strongly for them.

  55.         Other newsgroups of interest to SF fans
  56.   For Dr. Who fans, there's a newsgroup specifically for discussions
  57. about the movies, the show, and anything and everything related to Dr.
  58. Who: rec.arts.drwho.
  59.   For Red Dwarf, alt.tv.red-dwarf
  60.   For Star Trek fans, there are several groups:
  61.   rec.arts.startrek.info.  A distillation of news and information
  62. about Star Trek, including synopses of new episodes, convention
  63. reports, station airing times around the US and the world, and other
  64. tidbits of factual information about Trek.  Moderated: send submissions
  65. to trek-info@dweeb.fx.com; questions or comments should be sent to
  66. trek-info-request@deeb.fx.com.
  67.   rec.arts.startrek.current, r.a.s.fandom, r.a.s.tech, and r.a.s.misc
  68. were recently created.  There is a monthly information posting in those
  69. groups (and in news.answers, eventually) which describes all of r.a.startrek
  70. in detail.
  71.   For Cyberpunk: alt.cyberpunk.  There's also alt.cyberpunk.chatsubo,
  72. virtual reality via prose interaction.
  73.   Fandom has its own groups, as well: alt.fandom.cons and alt.fandom.misc.
  74.   For Pern fans, look in alt.fan.pern.

  83.      Charter: Group rec.arts.sf.misc will be the general-purpose
  84.               and spillover group for science fiction and fantasy
  85.           discussions that do not find a more specific subgroup 
  86.           under rec.arts.sf.*, or that would otherwise require 
  87.           wide crossposting among the other subgroups.

  90.      Charter: (moderated) Announcements of happenings in the
  91.               SF world, such as cons, including calls for con
  92.               participation, readings, deaths, honors, new SF

  107.      Charter: A place for personal wanted-to-buy and for-sale ads
  108.               for SF related materials.  Personal ads only;
  109.               commercial ads belong in comp.newprod or commercial
  110.               advertising channels, not elsewhere on USENet.  Do
  111.               NOT crosspost ads; those looking to buy or sell SF
  112.               stuff will be reading this group and just annoyed
  113.               by ads mixed in elsewhere.

  115. rec.arts.sf.movies
  116.      Charter: Discussions of all aspects of SF related movies not
  117.               otherwise covered in more specific groups (such as
  118.               the Star Trek group).  Specifically includes
  119.               screenplays looking for producers, and discussions
  120.               of novelizations as compared to the movie base;
  121.               discussion of novelizations independent of the 
  122.               related movie belong in .written.

  124. rec.arts.sf.reviews (moderated)
  125.     Charter: Reviews and critical discussion of SF/fantasy/horror 
  126.          works.  Works include novels, short fiction, movies,
  127.          music, periodicals, art, etc., that are of interest to
  128.          the SF community.  Reviews are expected to conform to
  129.          the guidelines in the FAQ "Welcome to rec.arts.sf.reviews"
  130.          posted to the group periodically and available by
  131.          anonymous FTP on the host net.bio.net [134.172.2.69]
  132.          (file: sf-reviews/welcome).  Archives of the group are also
  133.          available on net.bio.net in the directory misc/sf-reviews.

  139.      Charter: A home for the spinoff discussion of real and
  140.               speculative science and sometimes about how the
  141.               laws of science could be used in creating new SF
  142.               universes.

  144. rec.arts.sf.tv
  145.      Charter: A group for discussing general television SF, both
  146.               live acted and cartoons.  Note that some tv shows,
  147.           (such as Dr. Who and Star Trek) have their own
  148.           specialized newsgroups as well.

  151.      Charter: A group for discussing the general SF which is seen
  152.               by its audience in written form, whether printed or
  153.               online.  Note that many more specific groups in
  154.               rec.arts.sf.* exist to pull some traffic from this
  155.               group, but in general, this is where new releases
  156.               are discussed, informal reviews given, continuity
  157.               topics discussed, authors compared, and is the
  158.               starting point for many threads which should
  159.               eventually be moved to more appropriate groups.
